About the Role

The Wheeling Area Chamber of Commerce is seeking a full-time dynamic, relationship-driven Membership & Community Manager to serve as the primary connector between the Chamber and the local business community. This role is the first point of contact for new and prospective members and plays a critical part in ensuring that every business understands how the Chamber can support their growth.

The ideal candidate combines strong interpersonal skills with a passion for helping businesses thrive. This role supports member recruitment and retention, strengthens community partnerships, and helps advance the Chamber’s mission as a strategic convener and catalyst for economic development in the region.

Key Responsibilities:

Member Recruitment & Onboarding

  •  Serve as the main contact for membership inquiries and prospective members.
  • Conduct needs assessments to understand business goals, challenges, and appropriate membership options.
  • Guide businesses through membership tiers, sponsorship opportunities, and Chamber services.
  • Design and deliver a high-quality onboarding experience for new members.

Member Engagement & Retention

  • Develop and manage proactive retention strategies.
  • Monitor engagement across events, programs, and services to identify at-risk members.
  • Build strong relationships to ensure members feel supported, informed, and connected.
  • Gather feedback and translate insights into improvements to membership value.
  • Connect members with resources, partner organizations, or Chamber-led programs to support their business needs.

Community & Program Support

  •  Represent the Chamber at community events, business visits, ribbon cuttings, and regional meetings.
  • Support the President in strengthening partnerships with business, nonprofit, workforce, and economic development stakeholders.
  • Assist with the execution of signature Chamber programs and events.
  • Coordinate business visits and listening sessions to maintain insight into local business needs.
  • Support development of an annual program calendar aligned with the Chamber’s strategic framework.

 Data, Insights & Continuous Improvement

  •  Maintain accurate and current CRM records.
  • Produce monthly membership dashboards and insights for Chamber leadership and the Board.
  • Analyze trends to refine membership tiers, pricing, benefits, and offerings.
  • Help develop systems to measure program ROI, including attendance and member impact.

Marketing & Communications Support

  •  Assist with member spotlights, success stories, newsletters, and digital content.
  • Provide relevant updates for social media and member communications.
  • Ensure directory listings, announcements, and program information remain accurate.
  • Help amplify member achievements and local business success stories.

 Event & Sponsorship Coordination

  •  Coordinate member participation in events aligned with Chamber goals.
  • Support logistics for workshops, business visits, and community-facing programs.
  • Manage member involvement in sponsorship packages and ensure benefits are delivered as promised.

Qualifications:

  •  2–4 years of experience in customer service, community relations, membership management, sales, or similar relationship-driven roles.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and follow-through skills.
  • Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple priorities and maintain consistent processes.
  • Proficiency with CRM systems and comfort working with data, metrics, and basic reporting.
  • Interest in supporting small businesses, fostering community engagement, and advancing local economic development.

Physical Demands:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting and computer work.
  • Ability to lift up to 20 pounds (event materials, displays, etc.).
  • Ability to attend events outside regular business hours, including some evenings and weekends.

Compensation is commensurate upon experience level and has a base annual compensation range of $40K to $50K.  The position offers paid parking, paid time off, and a few other benefits.
