Nature Day Camp Counselor - Temporary, Part-Time

PRIMARY FUNCTION

Nature Day Camp Counselors develop, organize, and facilitate Nature Day Camp programming; ensure the well-being of camp participants; and maintain outstanding quality in the efforts of the Environmental Education department as it relates to the department’s mission statement and vision.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Desire and ability to work with children outdoors.

Good character, integrity, adaptability, enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self-control

High school graduate or equivalent; collegiate coursework in education, science and/or environmental education preferred.

At least 18 years of age

TYPICAL DUTIES

Develop and implement daily structured environmental and nature education lessons which increase awareness of the natural world, and develop habits that lead to good environmental stewardship as part of the Nature Day Camp curriculum (including rain plans)

Ensure the safety and well-being of camp participants and other departmental staff.

Effectively communicate with the public and parents about Nature Day Camp activities

Accurately sign-in and sign-out campers in accordance with Oglebay Institute policies

Maintain program equipment and storage areas; tidy all areas used at the end of each day; return program equipment to proper areas after each week of camp.

Complete the work of the department in accordance with the general policy, aims, and objectives of OI.

Consult with departmental personnel on the goals and objectives associated with Nature Day Camp

Communicate job-related issues and/or the need for assistance with job-related issues to the Assistant Director or Director

Interact with the public with a cheerful and positive attitude, solve guest’s problems and complaints in an appropriate manner, and maintain harmonious working relationship with fellow employees.

Attend in-service training and staff meetings as required.

Perform other duties as assigned.

HOURS

Camp is held during the summer months. COUNSELORS MUST BE PRESENT, WITHOUT ABSENCE, the entire duration as stated by contract and are required to invest the time necessary to produce exceptional results during the camp session. (Pre-arranged leaves must be approved by the director prior to camp training).
