Payroll Manager
A growing mining company based in Alabama is seeking a full-time Payroll Manger to manage and process payroll and related work for a workforce of over 600 plus (150 nonunion and 400 union) employees using ADP Workforce Now. The ideal candidates will have at least 5 years’ experience managing payroll for a similar size organization and related payroll experience with ADP – Workforce Now Payroll/HRIS systems. This position can be on-site or may be able to work remotely, pending the candidate’s background and experience level. Candidates must be tech savvy, employee-centric and supportive of employee needs, be able to meet deadlines, and must communicate extremely well, both verbally and in writing.
Position Summary
The Payroll Manager is responsible for overseeing and managing all payroll functions (including time and attendance coordination) for coal mining operations. This role ensures accurate and timely processing of payroll, time records, compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations, and effective management of payroll systems, processes, policies, and procedures. The Payroll Manager works closely with HR, finance, and operations departments to maintain seamless payroll/time keeping operations and will support the overall financial health of the organization.
Pending the operational needs of the company and the right candidate, this role could be or grow to be a remote or partially remote role. During the orientation period and as needed or required thereafter by the company, this role will need to be on-site for several weeks or days. This option can change at any time as may be needed by the Company.
Job Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Human Resources, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in payroll management, preferably in the mining, energy, or industrial sector.
- Comprehensive knowledge of payroll systems and software, ADP workforce now experience preferred or similar SAAS payroll/HRIS/HRMS related system.
- Strong understanding of federal, state, and local payroll regulations and tax laws.
- Certification such as Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) is preferred. Willingness to achieve such certification or similar after employment is a plus.
Primary Responsibilities
- Oversee the preparation and processing of bi-weekly payroll for all employees, ensuring accuracy and compliance with company policies and regulations.
- Maintain payroll records and reports, ensuring data integrity and confidentiality.
- Manage the administration of union agreements as they relate to payroll, including deductions, contributions, and reporting.
- Coordinate with HR and finance departments to ensure alignment of payroll with employee records and financial reporting.
- Respond to payroll-related inquiries and resolve issues promptly and effectively.
- Conduct regular audits of payroll procedures and records to ensure compliance and accuracy.
- Stay updated on changes in payroll laws and regulations, implementing necessary adjustments to payroll processes.
- Manage and train payroll staff, fostering a collaborative and efficient work environment.
- Prepare and submit payroll reports and filings to government agencies as required.
- Other related duties as assigned or directed by the President/COO, Head of HR, and/or their designees.
Physical Demands
- Ability to sit for extended periods while working at a computer.
- Occasionally required to lift and move files and documents weighing up to 25 pounds.
- Regular use of standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets.

- Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail.
- Proficiency in payroll software and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook).
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with employees at all levels.
- Knowledge of union agreements and their implications for payroll processes and benefits plans deductions, etc.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
- High level of integrity and discretion in handling sensitive and confidential information.
Compensation: The base compensation range is commensurate upon experience level using ADP or similar payroll program and payroll expertise and has an initial pay range between $85K and $105K. This position will also be eligible for performance bonuses based upon achievement of company and position goals.
